4 Steps to Feeling Peaceful During the Holidays

We are wrapping up with a memorable 2020 as we enter November. Ready or not, the holiday season is around the corner. For most of us, the holiday season brings excitement and anxieties at the same time. We are happy to see families, but we often feel anxious. Relationship issues seem to be most magnified during holidays.

Is it possible to have more peace and joy than anxiety during the holidays? I want to share four steps for doing just that.

  • The first step starts with knowing who you are by completing the 'Difference' assessment. It identifies your core values, psychological, and physical inborn tendencies. As a coach, I have found this to be the most unique and helpful assessment on the market. This is a powerful tool I use for all my clients. When we discover our inborn tendency and how every person is different, we have a deeper understanding of ourselves and the people around us.

  • The second step is to get rid of manuals — the unwritten expectations we have for other people in our lives. Our manuals are often detailed guidelines about how we want others to behave so we can feel better. Many of us believe that our happiness depends on someone else's behavior. We believe that our life would be better only if other people change. We don't realize that it is our expectations — the "manuals" — that cause much of our emotional pain. With a change in our expectations, many of our painful emotions, such as anger, disappointment, sadness, and rejection, could be dissipated.

  • The third step is to allow people to just be themselves. Try meeting family members where they are, without judgement. Connect with them by being curious about where they are and what they are interested in.

  • The fourth step is to understand that other people do not create our emotions. It is our thoughts that create our emotions. Our emotions drive all actions — and actions create the result in our lives.
